Leftovers are a topic of great importance for cooks of all levels, from novices to experts, and opinions on storage containers can be quite strong. There is an abundance of storage container options available, ranging from plastic and glass to even ceramic.
Caraway has made a name for itself as a ceramic kitchenware brand, and its storage set boasts many of the features of its other products, including a non-stick and non-toxic surface, included cabinet organizers, and the same color choices. Perhaps most notable, though, is that, like the other products, the set was originally only sold with all 14 pieces. But just like you can get a 3-Quart Sauce Pan or a Rectangle Baking Pan by themselves, you now can purchase individual options in the storage set.
Between the Large, Medium, or Small Containers, and the snack- and dip-sized Dot & Dash Containers, the set is big. The company sent us one to test out, but what we found is part of it is more useful than the others…and you’re in luck because it is on sale right now!
The set was sent in the mail in packaging very similar to its other products (in hefty, recyclable cardboard). The organizer is a canvas material as opposed to ceramic, and the actual pieces are heavy and sturdy, including the tops for the Large, Medium, and Small containers which are made of ceramic and glass.
After cleaning them with the provided sponge and letting them dry, I placed the items in my (small) cabinet. It took some time to arrange everything, especially since I already have two other glass storage sets. However, I was pleased to find that the Caraway Storage Set fit perfectly.
Over the next few weeks, I tested them for anything I needed—and found the Dash Containers to be my #1 favorite. These are not ceramic but plastic—and each one weighs 0.23 pounds, can hold up to 9 ounces of food or liquid, and is 5.63 inches long, 2.57 inches wide, and 1.85 inches deep.
I had the opportunity to use one of the Dash Containers shortly after storing them away. On my way home from the grocery store, the top of a 6-ounce carton of Greek yogurt tore, causing a mess. Fortunately, the long and deep storage container from the Caraway Storage Set provided ample space for the yogurt. I transferred the yogurt into the container, placed the lid on top, and stored it in the fridge. I was grateful that I didn’t have to go through the trouble of finding an alternative storage solution to salvage the yogurt.
Several days later, I found myself with approximately one-third of a block of tofu remaining after preparing dinner. I decided to store it in a separate long Dash Container, covering it with water to keep it fresh. A few days later, I utilized the remaining tofu for another dish, appreciating the convenience of having it stored properly in the container.
Other instances saw me use the Medium Container for two cups of cooked quinoa, and one of the Small containers to store a can of black beans. I found the tops of both became thick with condensation while in the refrigerator, During the testing period, I did not have a use for the Large Container and it is still sitting in my cabinet, unused.
For those who opt for the complete Caraway Storage Set, it’s worth noting that the Dash Containers fit snugly inside the Medium and Large Containers, though I haven’t utilized this feature yet.
Ultimately, if I had to choose just one item from the set, I would highly recommend the Dash Containers. These containers are larger than the Dot Containers but still compact enough to accommodate some of my most frequently used foods, making them a lifesaver when I had leftovers that needed storing. I was pleasantly surprised by how much they came in handy without even realizing it.
